Complete and Comprehensive Guide to Every Unit in the Game

An exhaustive analysis of every playable character in Three Houses, including optimal builds, recruitment requirements, and strategic value.

Three Houses features over 30 playable characters, each with unique stats, abilities, and potential. This comprehensive guide covers every single unit, their optimal builds, recruitment requirements, and whether they're worth using. Updated for Maddening difficulty.

Understanding the Basics

Before diving into individual units, understand these key concepts:

  • Growth Rates: Percentage chance to gain +1 in a stat per level
  • Personal Skills: Unique abilities each character has permanently
  • Combat Arts: Special attacks that use weapon durability or HP
  • Budding Talents: Hidden skills that unlock new abilities
  • Authority: Determines battalion strength and options

Black Eagles Students

Edelgard von Hresvelg

Role: Lord, Armored/Flying Powerhouse
Personal Skill: Imperial Lineage (bonus experience)
Strengths: Axes, Swords, Authority, Heavy Armor
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord

Edelgard is your lord on Black Eagles routes and a force of nature. High strength, good defense, and access to exclusive classes make her extremely versatile. Raging Storm combat art becomes available in her unique Emperor class, allowing multiple actions per turn. For optimal play, make her a Wyvern Lord for mobility and damage.

Hubert von Vestra

Role: Dark Mage/Strategic Nuker
Personal Skill: Officer Duty (bonus damage with gambits)
Strengths: Reason, Bows, Authority
Optimal Build: Dark Knight

Hubert is the game's premier dark magic user. Mire B and long-range chip damage make him valuable for linked attacks. His frozen lance spell is effective against cavalry. He's locked to Black Eagles routes and best used as a Dark Knight for mobility. Not top-tier but solid if you're using Black Eagles students.

Dorothea Arnault

Role: Versatile Mage/Dancer Candidate
Personal Skill: Songstress (adjacent allies heal 10% HP/turn)
Strengths: Swords, Reason, Authority
Optimal Build: Gremory or Dancer
Recruitment: Charm 25+ and Authority C

Dorothea is valuable primarily for Meteor, the longest-range spell in the game. This makes her excellent for setting up linked attacks on Maddening. Her healing spell list is solid, though not as good as Mercedes. She's also an excellent dancer candidate thanks to high charm and sword proficiency. Versatile and useful, definitely worth recruiting.

Ferdinand von Aegir

Role: Swift Strikes Paladin/Wyvern
Personal Skill: Confidence (+15 hit/avoid at full HP)
Strengths: Swords, Lances, Axes, Heavy Armor, Riding
Optimal Build: Paladin or Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Axes D and Heavy Armor C

Ferdinand is exceptional. Swift Strikes at A lances gives him guaranteed double attacks, his personal skill makes him hard to hit, and his stat growths are excellent across the board. He can go either Wyvern for mobility or Paladin for Swift Strikes spam. Either way, he's a force. Definitely recruit on every route.

Bernadetta von Varley

Role: Bow Specialist/Vengeance Sniper
Personal Skill: Persecution (+5 attack at less than max HP)
Strengths: Bows, Lances
Optimal Build: Bow Knight or Sniper
Recruitment: Bows C and Strength 20+

Bernadetta has two builds: standard bow user or Vengeance nuke. Her personal skill and access to Vengeance (damage scales with missing HP) make her capable of one-shotting bosses with proper setup. Standard bow build is also solid thanks to Encloser and Pass. Fun but requires specific setups. Worth recruiting if you have room.

Caspar von Bergliez

Role: Brawler/War Master
Personal Skill: Born Fighter (bonus hit on non-magic attacks)
Strengths: Axes, Brawling
Optimal Build: War Master
Recruitment: Brawling C and Strength 20+

Caspar has good offense but terrible accuracy and middling speed. He wants to be a War Master for Quick Riposte, but getting there is rough. His low hit rates make him frustrating to use on Maddening. He's usable but not recommended. There are better physical units.

Petra Macneary

Role: Evasion Tank/Assassin
Personal Skill: Hunter's Boon (+20 critical hit)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Axes, Riding, Flying
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Riding C and Dexterity 15+

Petra has excellent speed, good dexterity, and natural flying talent. Her crit bonus makes her deadly with killer weapons. She's one of the best candidates for Wyvern Lord and will dodge-tank her way through most encounters. Highly recommended recruit if you have deployment slots.

Linhardt von Hevring

Role: Dedicated Healer
Personal Skill: Catnap (chance to heal 10% HP each turn)
Strengths: Faith, Reason
Optimal Build: Bishop
Recruitment: Reason C and Magic 20+

Linhardt has Warp and Physic, making him a strong healer option. However, he can't reach Gremory (male) and his combat is weak. His personal skill is unreliable. He's usable if you're on Black Eagles, but Mercedes is better due to Gremory access and Fortify.

Blue Lions Students

Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd

Role: Lord, Overwhelming Physical Force
Personal Skill: Royal Lineage (bonus experience)
Strengths: Swords, Lances, Authority, Riding
Optimal Build: Great Lord (unique) or Paladin

Dimitri has insane strength growths and learns Battalion Vantage + Battalion Wrath, making him capable of one-rounding entire maps when set up properly. His exclusive Great Lord class is excellent. He's locked to Blue Lions route. Absolute powerhouse and probably the strongest lord in combat.

Dedue Molinaro

Role: Tank/Defensive Wall
Personal Skill: Staunch Shield (extra defense when waiting)
Strengths: Axes, Brawling, Heavy Armor
Optimal Build: Fortress Knight or War Master
Recruitment: Cannot recruit (Blue Lions only)

Dedue is the tankiest unit in the game with absurd defense and HP growth. His speed is awful, but he doesn't care because nothing can hurt him. He's amazing for blocking chokepoints and soaking damage. He does leave your party briefly in Part 2 on non-Blue Lions routes. Great on Blue Lions, impossible to get elsewhere.

Felix Hugo Fraldarius

Role: Physical DPS Monster
Personal Skill: Lone Wolf (+5 attack without battalion)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Brawling, Reason
Optimal Build: Sniper, Bow Knight, or War Master
Recruitment: Swords C+ and Speed 15+

Felix has the highest offensive potential of any non-lord unit. His strength and speed growths are exceptional, and Lone Wolf makes him deal ridiculous damage. Counterintuitively, he's better as a bow user than a sword user on Maddening. Sniper Felix with Hunter's Volley deletes everything. Absolutely recruit every single time.

Mercedes von Martritz

Role: Best Healer in the Game
Personal Skill: Live to Serve (heals self when healing others)
Strengths: Reason, Faith, Bows
Optimal Build: Gremory
Recruitment: Magic 20+ (no skill requirement)

Mercedes has Physic, Fortify, and Restore. She can access Gremory for double uses. Her personal skill means she never needs healing. She makes every map easier. Required recruit for Maddening, highly recommended for all difficulties. Easy to recruit too.

Ashe Ubert

Role: Utility/Chest Opener
Personal Skill: Lockpick (open chests without keys)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Axes
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Lances C and Charm 15+

Ashe's personal skill is his main draw, removing the need for door/chest keys. His combat stats are middling across the board. He's usable but not exceptional. If you're recruiting him, turn him into a Wyvern Lord to shore up his mediocre stats with class bonuses.

Annette Fantine Dominic

Role: Rally Bot/Off-Healer
Personal Skill: Perseverance (rally boosts heal HP)
Strengths: Reason, Axes
Budding Talent: Lightning Axe (axes)
Optimal Build: Dark Knight or Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Faith C and Magic 25+

Annette learns more Rally abilities than anyone else, making her great for support. Her Lightning Axe budding talent allows a hybrid magical axe wielder build. She has Crusher (relic weapon) on Blue Lions. Fun and versatile, but not essential. Her high magic requirements make her harder to recruit.

Sylvain Jose Gautier

Role: Versatile Cavalry/Wyvern
Personal Skill: Philanderer (bonus damage vs female enemies)
Strengths: Axes, Lances, Riding
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord or Paladin
Recruitment: Free for female Byleth, Charm 15+ and Reason D for male

Sylvain comes with the Lance of Ruin, a strong relic weapon. He learns Swift Strikes and has solid stat growths. He can also use magic if needed. Free recruitment for female Byleth makes him a no-brainer. Definitely recruit him.

Ingrid Brandl Galatea

Role: Pegasus/Falcon Knight
Personal Skill: Lady Knight (bonus might and hit with gambits)
Strengths: Swords, Lances, Riding, Flying
Optimal Build: Falcon Knight
Recruitment: Flying C and Dexterity 20+

Ingrid has excellent speed and resistance but terrible strength. Her low attack makes her struggle to kill on Maddening even with class bonuses. She's great for gambit spam and tanking mages, but not much else. Better on Normal/Hard than Maddening. Has Luin relic on Blue Lions route.

Golden Deer Students

Claude von Riegan

Role: Lord, Flying Bow Specialist
Personal Skill: Leicester Lineage (bonus experience)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Authority, Riding, Flying
Optimal Build: Barbarossa (unique class)

Claude is unique as a flying bow lord. His exclusive Barbarossa class is excellent, and Fallen Star combat art gives him pseudo-evasion tanking. He's locked to Golden Deer route. Very strong and versatile, though not quite as overwhelming as Dimitri in raw combat.

Lorenz Hellman Gloucester

Role: Hybrid Physical/Magical
Personal Skill: Distinguished House (bonus damage with gambits)
Strengths: Lances, Reason, Riding
Optimal Build: Dark Knight
Recruitment: Riding C and Reason C

Lorenz has Frozen Lance and Thyrsus relic (+2 range on black magic). He's mediocre in combat but Thyrsus makes him worth recruiting just to steal his relic for your better mages. Give Thyrsus to Lysithea for maximum cheese.

Raphael Kirsten

Role: Brawler Tank
Personal Skill: Goody Basket (chance to heal 10% HP when fighting)
Strengths: Axes, Brawling, Heavy Armor
Optimal Build: War Master
Recruitment: Brawling C and Heavy Armor C

Raphael has absurd HP and defense but terrible speed and skill. He'll tank physical hits but struggles to double and has accuracy issues. War Master is his best class for Quick Riposte. He's usable but there are better options. His personal skill is unreliable.

Ignatz Victor

Role: Support/Break Specialist
Personal Skill: Watchful Eye (+20 hit)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Authority
Optimal Build: Sniper
Recruitment: Bows C and Authority C

Ignatz has the highest base dexterity in the game and learns Rally Speed. Break Shot combat art is useful for reducing enemy defense. His personal skill ensures he always hits. Problem is his offense is weak. He's usable as a support bot but not essential.

Lysithea von Ordelia

Role: Magical Nuke/Warp Bot
Personal Skill: Mastermind (+2 experience)
Strengths: Faith, Reason, Authority
Budding Talent: Swordfaire (swords)
Optimal Build: Gremory
Recruitment: Faith C+ and Magic 35+

Lysithea is the best mage in the game. Dark Spikes, Luna, Warp, and insane magic growths make her unstoppable. Her only weakness is frail defenses, but who cares when everything is dead? Recruit her every single time on every single route. Non-negotiable.

Marianne von Edmund

Role: Healer/Magical Cavalry
Personal Skill: Animal Friend (bonus damage vs cavalry/flying)
Strengths: Swords, Faith, Riding
Budding Talent: Frozen Lance (lances)
Optimal Build: Holy Knight
Recruitment: Riding C and Magic 20+

Marianne has Physic and Silence for healing and disruption. Blutgang relic weapon is strong. Her Frozen Lance budding talent makes her a potent Holy Knight. She's a solid all-around unit with good healing and offense. Worth recruiting if you need another healer.

Hilda Valentine Goneril

Role: Wyvern Lord Powerhouse
Personal Skill: Advocate (adjacent male allies get +3 damage)
Strengths: Axes, Lances, Heavy Armor
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Charm 30+ and Axes C (cannot recruit on Crimson Flower)

Hilda is a pink-haired axe-wielding monster. Excellent strength and speed, natural axe/lance proficiency, and Freikugel relic weapon make her exceptional. She's basically a better version of most physical units. High charm requirement makes her harder to recruit. Cannot be recruited on Crimson Flower route.

Leonie Pinelli

Role: Bow Knight/Physical DPS
Personal Skill: Rivalry (extra attack against males)
Strengths: Lances, Bows, Riding
Optimal Build: Bow Knight
Recruitment: Lances D and Strength 10+ (very easy)

Leonie has consistent, solid growths across all stats. Point-Blank Volley makes her deadly at close range. She's extremely reliable and easy to recruit. One of the best physical units in the game. Definitely recruit her on every route.

Church of Seiros Faculty

Manuela Casagranda

Role: Healer/Sword User
Personal Skill: Infirmary Master (healing magic heals more)
Strengths: Swords, Faith
Optimal Build: Gremory or Falcon Knight
Recruitment: Available from Chapter 5 in any route

Manuela has Warp and good healing. Her bases are better than most students early. She can also use swords competently. She's a solid backup healer if you don't have Mercedes or want a second Warp user. Falls off late game compared to students with better growths.

Hanneman von Essar

Role: Black Magic User
Personal Skill: Crest Scholar (magic attacks with crests do more damage)
Strengths: Bows, Reason, Riding
Optimal Build: Dark Knight
Recruitment: Available from Chapter 5 in any route

Hanneman has Meteor for chip damage but mediocre combat stats. His personal skill only triggers on crest procs, which is unreliable. He's usable but there's no reason to use him over Lysithea or other mages. Only use if you really need another Meteor user.

Seteth

Role: Pre-promoted Wyvern
Personal Skill: Guardian (adjacent female allies take less damage)
Strengths: Swords, Lances, Axes, Flying
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Joins automatically Part 2 (Chapter 13)

Seteth joins with good bases and natural flying proficiency. Ochain shield is an excellent relic. He's a solid Wyvern Lord who doesn't need much investment. Great filler unit when you don't have enough trained characters. Available on all non-Crimson Flower routes.

Flayn

Role: Healer with Rescue
Personal Skill: Lily's Poise (adjacent allies take less magic damage)
Strengths: Faith, Reason, Flying
Optimal Build: Gremory or Dancer
Recruitment: Joins automatically Part 1 (Chapter 7)

Flayn has Rescue, the only spell that can pull allies to safety. This alone makes her unique. Her growths are mediocre and she joins underleveled. She's also an excellent Dancer candidate. Use her for Rescue utility or make her your dancer. Available on all non-Crimson Flower routes.

Cyril

Role: Physical DPS/Wyvern
Personal Skill: Aptitude (bonus growth rates)
Strengths: Axes, Bows, Flying
Optimal Build: Wyvern Lord
Recruitment: Available from Chapter 5 in any route

Cyril joins underleveled but has Aptitude for bonus growths and Point-Blank Volley. With investment he becomes a strong Wyvern Lord. Problem is he needs more babying than recruiting a good student. He's usable but requires effort. Only use if you like the character.

Catherine

Role: Pre-promoted Swordmaster
Personal Skill: Fighting Spirit (might and hit when HP not maxed)
Strengths: Swords, Brawling
Optimal Build: Swordmaster or Falcon Knight
Recruitment: Joins automatically Part 2 (Chapter 12)

Catherine joins with excellent bases and Thunderbrand relic sword. She's immediately useful and remains strong throughout. Her only weakness is being locked to swords. Transition her to Falcon Knight for mobility if possible. Great unit, available on all non-Crimson Flower routes.

Shamir Nevrand

Role: Bow Specialist
Personal Skill: Survival Instinct (avoid +5 at less than half HP)
Strengths: Lances, Bows
Optimal Build: Sniper or Bow Knight
Recruitment: Available from Chapter 6, Charm 20+ post-timeskip

Shamir is the best pre-promoted combat unit. She joins with great bases, Hunter's Volley, and excellent bow ranks. She's immediately your best bow user and stays relevant all game. Highly recommended to recruit and use. Available on all routes.

Alois Rangeld

Role: Warrior/Support
Personal Skill: Compassion (adjacent allies heal 10% HP)
Strengths: Axes, Brawling, Heavy Armor
Optimal Build: War Master
Recruitment: Joins automatically Part 2 (Chapter 12)

Alois has decent bases but joins late. His personal skill is okay for support. He's usable as War Master for Quick Riposte but nothing special. Only use if you need a filler physical unit. Available on all non-Crimson Flower routes.

Gilbert Pronislav

Role: Tank
Personal Skill: Veteran Knight (rally bonuses heal adjacent allies)
Strengths: Lances, Axes, Heavy Armor, Riding
Optimal Build: Great Knight
Recruitment: Blue Lions only, joins automatically

Gilbert is a worse Dedue who joins later. High defense but awful speed. He's usable for blocking chokepoints but Dedue does it better. Only available on Blue Lions route. Use him if you need a backup tank, otherwise bench him.

DLC Units (Ashen Wolves)

Yuri Leclerc

Role: Evasion Tank/Trickster
Personal Skill: Honorable Spirit (avoid and crit boost)
Strengths: Swords, Bows, Faith, Authority
Optimal Build: Trickster or Assassin
Recruitment: Complete Cindered Shadows DLC

Yuri is extremely versatile with excellent speed and skill. He can heal, fight in melee, use bows, and has incredible avoid. His unique Trickster class is fun. He's one of the best DLC units. Definitely use him if you have the DLC.

Balthus von Albrecht

Role: Brawler Tank
Personal Skill: King of Grappling (avoid and might with gauntlets)
Strengths: Axes, Brawling
Optimal Build: War Master
Recruitment: Complete Cindered Shadows DLC

Balthus has high HP and strength but mediocre speed. He's best as a War Master for Quick Riposte. His personal skill helps with gauntlet avoid. He's solid but not exceptional. Use if you like brawlers.

Constance von Nuvelle

Role: Mage/Rescue User
Personal Skill: Dual personality (stats change with indoor/outdoor)
Strengths: Reason, Faith, Flying
Optimal Build: Gremory or Dark Flier
Recruitment: Complete Cindered Shadows DLC

Constance has Bolting, Rescue, and excellent magic growths. Her personal skill is gimmicky but she's strong regardless. Dark Flier is her unique class for flying mage. She's a very strong unit if you have DLC.

Hapi

Role: Dark Mage
Personal Skill: Watchful (avoid and crit avoid boost)
Strengths: Reason, Axes
Optimal Build: Valkyrie or Dark Knight
Recruitment: Complete Cindered Shadows DLC

Hapi learns every dark magic spell and has excellent magic growths. Her personal skill helps her survive. She's the best dark mage in the game if you have DLC. Valkyrie unique class works great for her.

Final Thoughts

Three Houses gives you enormous flexibility in unit building. Almost anyone can be made viable with enough investment. However, on Maddening difficulty, some units are objectively better than others due to base stats, growths, and abilities.

Focus your recruitment on versatile units with strong combat arts, good spell lists, or unique utility. Wyvern Lord is the best class in the game, so units with flying talent are inherently valuable. Healers with Physic range are essential on Maddening.

Most importantly, use units you enjoy. This is a game, not a job. But if you want to optimize your team for Maddening difficulty, this guide should point you in the right direction.
